About 15 years ago my friends Phil Giroux and Derek Harvie took opposing ends in an argument of "who would win in the battle of Cougar vs Bear". The argument was recorded in a one hour Television special that aired on Canadian Television.

The argument that took place that day was as ruthless and fact filled as they come. In the end the battle was too close to declare a winner. Over the years the discussion has arisen between us as it did again this past week. I felt obliged to post this last discussion here on my blog.

I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did.

Here is how the latest discussion began:

I received a video recently from a Twitter follower that I sent to both Derek and Phil. It opened up some old feelings between the two. Unfortunately the video featuring a battle between a Cougar and a Bear is no longer online. I did find a computer generated re-enactment of the incident that took place.

This is the email discussion that took place between the two after viewing the original video:

Glenn

Hey Guys, I think you should watch this video. I'd like to get your opinion on it.

Derek

jeeze... the cougar didn't stand a chance!

Phil

The mountain lion was the one stalking the bear in first place... The bear is lucky that the mountain lion was busy taking down the human and that it became a two on one situation... The mountain lion just casually strolled away when both the human was hacking away at it with a pick axe and combo with the bear sneaking up from behind (the only chicken way it would approach the mountain lion since it was busy with the human)...

Even in a 2 on one situation (2; human and bear vs. 1 mountain lion), the bear couldn't even damage the mountain lion... Wow !!

Derek

The cougar was sneaking around trying to get to the baby bear but was too scared to try anything. Bears don't sneak and stalk. When they want something they just march up to it and attack. Like it did to the cougar... Grabbed it by the throat and in one move, flung it back into the forest. Hopefully the 90 year old man it tried to kill (but couldn't) will find it and make sure it's ok! We're all hoping the cougar isn't hurt too badly!

Phil

Clearly, that mountain lion was going after the bears, and it definitely wasn't scared at all (obviously)... That bear couldn't even fight the mountain lion even though there was a human trying to fight it off as well, 2 on 1...

Poor mama bear, it was her only chance, by ganging-up with the man, to attempt to hurt the mountain lion... All the bears are probably done by now as we write about this... I feel sorry for the bears, but the mountain lion sees them as easy food, including the mama bear - nice meal for the mountain lion...

Glenn

With this new video evidence can we consider this argument settled once and for all.

Phil

Already was settled... Cougar wins ;)

Glenn

Derek, Any closing remarks? I want to post this discussion you guys just had on my blog.

Derek

I think the video speaks for itself. Mountain Lion tried to kill a weak old man... bear comes along, grabs the mountain lion by it's neck and throws it into the forest. If the cougar was so strong it would have been pissed off after that humiliation and would've retaliated and attacked the bear but he was too scared so he ran away with his tail between his legs. Now the old man is walking around the woods looking for the cougar to make sure its not hurt. Those are the facts... based on that, which of the two animals do you think is stronger?

Glenn

I've always been on the fence with this argument but I must say the video is pretty convincing. There are details that may have skewed the battle however.

Was the cougar already injured prior to the battle? Age of the cougar. Was he elderly?

In our lifetimes I don't think we'll ever know who would win a battle between a Cougar and a Bear.
